I have been reading John Masters' trilogy about World War 1, which WP sa is regarded as his magnum opus.
It's uh not altogether good (in particular, almost everyone in the 144 pages before war breaks out, and quite a few afterwards, is almost spookily prescient about how it's going to turn out - usually we get a token explanation of how everyone thinks it'll all be over by Christmas and then whoever we're hearing about doesn't, and people spend quite a lot of time wondering if it will overturn the established social conventions - we've even had someone wondering if imposing draconian postwar conditions on Germany will mean trouble later, in about September 1914) and one of the ways it's not altogether good is there's a certain amount of bad sex...
... in one instance of which, midway through the book, someone's hymen is torn with "an audible crack".
Now, to be fair, as far as I know I am not well informed on what noise that makes (if any). But I'm pretty sure it doesn't make an audible crack!
