Last Samurai

It's not brilliant, but it doesn't stink either. Nevertheless, a Sun Tzu Tactics Masterclass:

You and your elite cavalry, heavily armoured, equipped with bows and swords (with which your men are amazingly proficient), are to attack a larger body of unarmoured infantry equipped with firearms and bayonets. Do you do so:

a) through the trees of a forest on a misty day with very poor visibility?

or

b) in broad daylight across a totally empty field with excellent lines of sight?

Ooh! I know! I know!

Whatever. You send one group in to take the fire and generally be cannon fodder, and the bulk of the cavalry to wheel round to charge from the rear. The infantry are stupid and won't notice this happening until a bunch of heavy cavalry smash into them.

Form square against cavalry, form line against artillery.

I learnt that from Sharpe.

Ah, but the Japanese regular army don't have pikes, possibly because in some of the shots they have late c19th bolt-action rifles even though later in the film they're back to muzzle-loaders.
