My friend Robin and I are booked onto the Bike Events London-Cambridge ride on the 23rd July; we had planned to take our tandem. There is stuff below of interest even if you don't want to ride a tandem.

However, it now seems unlikely that Robin will be able to make it, so I'm wondering if any of my other friends would like a go on the tandem, which is less dangerous than sticking drawing pins into a sleeping panther. (I have always captained the tandem, so I am looking for a volunteer stoker. When Robin and I were both new we figured out how to ride it without falling off once and subsequently I was able to get [livejournal.com profile] pm215 stoking without any difficulty.)

My plan is as follows;

22nd July; meet Nerdvana (readily accessible from Feltham or Hampton railway stations), familiarise victim with tandem. Leave Feltham for chez [livejournal.com profile] hazyjayne in Islington; 16.6 miles by multimap shortest, so probably about 18 by not-completely-nightmarish. Crash there. She is not an axe murderer AFAIK.

23rd July; rise ohGodAM and ride to Waltham Cross for 0830 ride start, about 13 miles. Ride halfway to Cambridge, stop, consume BEER and food, ride some more. About 50 miles. Go to the Carlton Arms and demonstrate the tandem to anyone who wants a shot. Leave the tandem in Cambridge because Robin and I will come up by train and recover it some other weekend. Recover home separately (I may crash in Cambridge).

If this sounds like fun, I will need to know your inside leg measurement. You _may_ wish to register for the ride anyway if, in the event of Robin turning up, you would want to do the ride on a solo _and_ can arrange your own crashspace etc. Otherwise, you'll have to impersonate Robin Geddes. In order to measure your inside leg correctly, stand near a wall, pull a book right up into your crotch (gently, boys), and measure the height of that against the wall.
