I think what puzzles me most about the Hugo-fiddling exercise, on reflection, is the following set of statements, roughly summing up the fiddlers' position.

1) The Hugos are a mere popularity contest.
2) Corriera is a vastly popular author who has sold squillions of books, "more than anyone in the field except Gaiman and Martin".
3) Corriera has found it impossible to win a Hugo even after attempting to fix the nominations ballot last year because of condition 1).
4) Hugo voters and a secret cabal of fandom loathe right-wing American authors like Corriera.
5) Said loathers nominated him for a John W. Campbell award (same electorate) for best new writer in 2011 because, er.
6) They also loathe anyone remotely associated in any way with Baen Books.
7) Lois McMaster Bujold, noted Baen author, has 5 Hugos, 3 for books published by Baen, because, er.
