(no subject)

I discovered this weekend that you can transport Ikea Billy bookcases (ie, about as big as freestanding flatpack bookcases get) by bicycle. We chained together my Y-Frame Large and Small trailers, put towels on the trailers, and roped the bookcase down.

On the third one I even had the confidence to cycle with it (at about 6mph). It probably helps to have the loading box folded up on the rear trailer, so the bookcase doesn't want to slide off backwards.

Actually it was way easier cycling on the road than walking on the pavement. Pedestrians (and those foolish enough to cycle on shared-use paths) get fobbed off with a really crappy surface to do it on.

AGH. Would that we'd known that back in the day.

OK, admittedly that's for the best (can you imagine the constant wagon rides?), but still. We could've made one out of Lego or something.

OK, now I want to make a lego bike trailer. I'd guess the load-bearing capacity would be on the low side without some sturdy glue, though.

I've transported a benno cd rack (same height, but very skinny) on the bike by resting the middle shelf on the saddle and leaning it on handlebars and pushing the bike, but also considering the faff of continually going up and down kerbs I just walked in the road. No-one seemed too bothered, though I expect I got a few funny looks.

Impressive.

Remind me to tell you about the time I transported a fully assembled Benno DVD tower on foot/DLR sometime...

They always look so easy to transport (mind you, they also always look so useful, so that's another way in which they're deceptive).
