...although I haven't actually swum in at least a decade; I am assuming it is one of those things one doesn't forget...

Same here, though closer to two decades.

And I'm modest with it too ...

But actually, I can swim 1000m any time I like, and probably 1500m with a bit more effort, and I'll give good odds on racing any of my friends over shorter distances (except possibly the ones who do triathlons). Way easier for me than running 1km, though obviously slower.

I'd like to see you run 1km in water, though. Bet you can swim faster then :)

until fairly recently I swam most mornings before work. Once I've had these annoying lumps on my chest cut off I'll start doing so again.

Oh, I have a great deal of aesthetic appreciation for them on other people, but mine are just wrong...

Well I'm not quite sure about "tremendous speed and athleticism", but somewhere between that and the next category down.

Although as someone else says above - I haven't been swimming in at least ten years, so who knows, maybe I'll end up drowning now.

A little from column A, in that I now know how to dive so I'm more dolphin-like than your average swimmer, and a little from column B, in that I probably can't swim more than about 500 metres without treading water for a bit.

I did not learn to swim in the Scouts. There was a municipal learn-to-swim scheme at the nearest swimming pool, which happened to be in the same building as the town hall. And I did. BSc, SSc.

I like to swim, but I mostly do my own thing, ie, doggy paddle as opposed to anything sensible. I like to tread water and float around, and hate lanes and doing lengths.

At primary school, I got my 10m, 25m, 50m, 100m and 200m badges, I think. At secondary school, I got some badge that involved jumping in the deep end and collecting hoops and that kind of ridiculousness.

I've never done life-saving training (with the scouts or anyone else), so have not actually tried swimming in my pyjamas, but in practice I know I'm a strong enough swimmer to do so.

I don't know about speed or athleticism, but I'm happy to swim for long distances/periods of time, or just loll about in the sea floating on my back and pretending to be a seal. I'd far rather swim a kilometre than run it.
