I find that kind of prescient character to be very annoying too. One of the reasons I like Partick O'Briens navel novels is that his highly skilled surgeon cares nothing for hygiene.
I never got on with O'Brien, but I can't fault him on that one; I'm thinking now of one of the less good CSF imitators [1], where the protag straight up just thinks slavery is abominable and rushes in to rescue someone from it - not in the plausible way that Hornblower (or Wilberforce) might abhor it, but with outright C20th sensibilities.
[1] and to be fair to O'Brien, he's not even really imitating CSF.
