Imagine you can only drink one alcoholic drink for the rest of your life, but you're allowed to choose which. What'll it be? I don't mean an answer like "cider", I mean an answer like "Weston's Old Rosie scrumpy".

Clarification: if you pick something that mixes, it has to be in a specific configuration. You can't have "Gordon's gin" and then drink all gin-based drinks; that gets you neat gin. You'd have to pick "Gordon's gin, G&T" or something.

If you don't drink at all... pick one non-alcoholic beverage.

Regardless, you're going to be allowed as much water as you need, so you don't need to pick something that will prevent you dying of thirst.

Are we allowed mixers? Or do we have to stick with the same mixer as well?

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't thought of that. One specific mixed configuration.

[identity profile] wehmuth.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured that was probably the case. Fortunately, my choice already complies.

Oh and sorry about the game; I have been rushed off my feet.

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
A friend of mine also said he might do it, so no worries. I'll keep where I am - whoever actually gets organised enough to submit a move first is the player. :-)

We are of One Mind, I see ;-p

I have no idea about wine and port brands. Or grape varieties. I just grab one that looks nice and doesn't seem too pricey or too cheap.

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a tricky one. At one end of the scale, say, if you're making a mixed drink with vodka, worrying about what _kind_ of vodka is pretty daft. On the other hand requiring specific varieties stops all the beer drinkers saying "beer", which is clearly far too vague.

[identity profile] tigerfort.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Do booze-drinkers get an unlimited variety of non-alcoholic drinks provided they don't mix them with the booze? Or are you assuming that the favourite alcoholic drink of a booze-drinker will be preferred to their favourite non-alcoholic drink?

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that is the assumption; it's just that the question is about booze. The non-booze-answer option is just there for people who don't drink at all. The question of what non-booze drinks we get is left deliberately vague. Otherwise you'd all answer "coffee" anyway (or, if pressed, "Irish coffee").

[identity profile] tigerfort.livejournal.com 2009-11-13 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I regard coffee as a terrible waste of potential chocolate-coated coffee beans :)

I was wondering whether you might get different answers, though (even ignoring coffee) - booze is nice, but I can live without it, and there are non-alcoholic drinks that I reckon I like about as much as my favourite boozen (and drink more often, I suspect). So the answer you get if I'm giving up all other non-water drinks might not be the same as the one if I'm only giving up all other alcohol containing drinks.

(Yes, I do know I'm being needlessly pedantic, but this side of the question strikes me as being interesting too. So there ;-)

I wouldn't say no to Chiswick bitter either, though.

If "vintage port" isn't specific enough, then any I'd be quite happy to stick to any one of the well-known names, and any good year 8-)

I did think about choosing a cider, but then I realised that I don't always want to drink cider, and it gives me a stomach upset if I drink it too much or too often.

So instead I picked my old favourite, the Cape Cod - voddy and cranberry to you. Takes me right back to the old days of the Q Club when my drink would be on the bar before I even had my coat off. I chose a nice vodka to go in it though, rather than the two-quid-a-pop paintstripper of yesteryear.

Which breaks up the tide of gin and tonic drinkers nicely.

I find at Vags I have only to sidle up to the bar and catch the eye of the tall barman to be handed a pint of Chiswick. Very handy.

*nods* He knows my order too now - and usually at the start of the evening has it pulled for me while I'm still saying my hellos. Bless him.

I might well be tempted by steph's Black Dog Mild, or sherm's oatmeal stout though. Something on those lines was definitely in the running.

A good mild would also be fine though I'd probably pick Minotaur, or I could also go for Espresso Stout, or an oyster Stout, or I could even live with Guinness if it was the extraordinarily good Guinness I've very occasionally had.

Mmmm good dark beer, how we love you.

I was sore tempted by a mild, but...

Black Sheep's not the world's most exciting beer, but it's a damn fine all-rounder which I can find myself drinking in most circumstances. On the whole, I'd often prefer a Sneck Lifter or something but there's many places I'll drink a Sheep where I wouldn't go for a Snecky.

If there were too many people going for Bombay Sapphire gin, I could probably cope with Tanqueray instead. The hardship etc.

Not fair, it was far too tricky choosing from a single malt, a Bordeaux, a Burgundy, Chianti classico and a fuller's beer (sad, but I'm partial to ESB).

And then when we're talking single malt... asking me to choose between The Macallan 21 fine oak, Highland Park 12, Suntory Yamazaki 12 and Talisker 18 is mean.

I'm a bit torn between choosing one of the cheap lagers that I often drink (eg Carling) and choosing something nicer!

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear God, don't sentence yourself to a lifetime of Carling. Pick something nice!

I guess I'm late to this party, but would be content with vodka w/grapefruit juice for my one alcoholic drink.

Of course, it would have to be fresh squeezed!

[identity profile] damerell.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never tried to squeeze vodka.

[identity profile] dangerouslysane.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
lol--have enough good vodka and you're liable to try to squeeze a lot of things you shouldn't!

My bad--should have specified that the grapefruit should be squeezed.

*clink* Cheers!

Presumably one might get sick of drinking the same beer endlessly, so I chose one with a silly name as well as tasting good. The joke would maybe wear off eventually as well, but maybe that buys a bit more time.

[identity profile] weegoddess.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I don't like alcoholic drinks. I expect that's really boring. But there isn't an alcoholic drink so far that I would prefer to fruit juice.

I digress; that wasn't the purpose of this comment. The purpose was to wish you a happy birthday.
