I have no idea about wine and port brands. Or grape varieties. I just grab one that looks nice and doesn't seem too pricey or too cheap.

It's a tricky one. At one end of the scale, say, if you're making a mixed drink with vodka, worrying about what _kind_ of vodka is pretty daft. On the other hand requiring specific varieties stops all the beer drinkers saying "beer", which is clearly far too vague.
