R.e. walking on the Cam: be extremely careful. In the winter of (I think) 1991, my friend Kelvin Pollard walked across the ice to Sidney Sussex boatyard, fell through and was drowned. The Cam often flows quite quickly under the ice, and will drag you away from the hole you fall through in short order. He had four friends with him; none of them could even see him after he'd fallen in, let alone try to break the ice to try to get him out again.
