This is (for you) rather uncharacteristic wheel-reinvention, is it not? Is it a test bed for a new style of vision system you've thought up, or is it just a vehicle for risque jokes?
It's not been a lot of work so far, and I don't think anyone who wants to write a roguelike is ever satisfied with someone else's "move the @" skeleton.
In particular there's only one other roguelike project in Perl that I'm aware of and Perl is the only language I could possibly do this in without having to put "learn how to program properly in FOO" at the head of the yak-shaving queue. :-)
