I succumbed to the current trend - there's a bottle of absinthe in the booze cupboard. It's scary stuff - I swear the sake is creeping to the back to get away from it.

"It feels like someone just shot me in the face, with a shotgun, filled, with licorice."

hrmmm. i really really need to find out which particular brand of absinthe i was drinking on saturday, because it didn't taste of aniseed/licorice. and was therefore drinkable :-)

The stuff at the party? I didn't taste it for exactly the reason that I dislike aniseed intensely... Perhaps if you find out what brand it was, you should keep it well away from me... ;)

ummm. that one *didn't* taste of aniseed. i'd have thrown up (most likely) were it to have done. i therefore surmise that you probably would like that one. unless you want it kept away from you for the reason that you think you might become addicted to it ... :-)

I suspect that was the sense of it.

If the stuff you had came in a tall square bottle it was probably naath's - which apparently came from the ex-Jug and Firkin on Mill Road. I assume she can answer questions as to the variety.

The second :) I've avoided absinthe because the one taste I had I detested the flavour. One that I could stomach would be *very* dangerous...

Pretty much, except this stuff burns all the way down. I like it in a strange kind of nasty way.

Where do you get Sake from?

Japanese shops, if you want decent stuff. Tescos or wherever usually sell dodgier verieties which are fine for cooking with but that I'd rather not drink. Good sake is *nice*.

Some of it is meant to be served cold, but if you're buying the cheap stuff it's much more likely to be drinkable hot.

A friend of mine usually brings a carton or two to UK anime conventions. If we can get to it before Rumi inhales it all, it's quite good cold - and pretty handy to be able to drink a liquid that looks exactly like water in water-like quantities, in terms of not annoying the hotel.

Marna is spot on the money if you are sophisticated - the Oriental City mall near Colindale Tube station (come out of Tube, turn right, walk for 5-10 minutes) has a very wide range if you escape the depths of Essex - but fortunately I am an ignorant Westerner and will drink anything if it's heated up.

Sainsburys and some off-licences sell Hakutsuru sake, which is actually not bad at all. Tesco sell Choya, which is not in my opinion quite as good. Both go for about 6 quid a bottle.
